Southwell racecourse is an oval track offering all weather flat racing in the winter and jump racing through the summer on the turf course. The course is very flat with the turf course running on the inside of the all weather. The fences on the course can be quite tricky with the fences being stiff making good jumping ability a necessity. In the winter months the ground is very heavy making it a tougher ride and the strongest horse always comes out on top. Having good form with previous course and distance experience is a big advantage when racing at Southwell.

Novices tend not to do well at Southwell due to the jumps and the ground not often on the good side. There is quite a high kickback on the winter track with it being made from fibre sand. Having an early lead is always beneficial as it can be a struggle to make up ground from the back of the field.

Getting position on the straight is key to getting a strong finish. Runners down the middle of the track tend to make up ground quicker. It’s a common fact that the centre of the course is the quickest. Being drawn low has the higher advantage or even better being drawn low to middle.

Our Southwell horse racing tips follow the track guide, draw bias and course and distance data. We look closely at form and how well the horses are performing at home as well as on the track.

Jockeys to look out for are Silvestre De Sousa, Richard Johnson and Sean Bowen. Andrew Mullen holds the number 1 spot for wins but has quite a low strike rate of 17% this racing season. Trainers to look out for are M Appleby, P D Evans and D Shaw. Henderson has a high strike rate of 58% over 12 rides making him a hot prospect for future races in comparison to the top trainer Sppleby with 20 wins over 116 races.
